The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has appointed Mr. George Obell as the new Commissioner for the Micro and Small Taxpayers Department (MST).
This appointment is a significant step in the authority’s mission to improve service delivery and promote inclusive economic growth.
Mr. Obell has been acting in this role since the department was created in March 2025, and he brings with him an impressive 28 years of experience in tax administration.
His background includes serving as the Deputy Commissioner for the Medium Taxpayers Office (MTO) and the Deputy Commissioner for the East & South of Nairobi (E&SON) Tax Service Office, where he spearheaded innovative reforms in digital taxation and risk-based compliance strategies.
“The KRA Board and Management extend their congratulations to Mr. Obell on this well-deserved role and are confident that his visionary leadership will further bolster KRA’s initiatives to support micro and small taxpayers, improve compliance, and encourage inclusive economic growth,” KRA said in a statement regarding the appointment.
Mr. Obell also chairs the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) VAT Technical Committee and possesses a wealth of knowledge in areas such as digital taxation, transfer pricing, BEPS, and the Exchange of Information.
He holds an MBA, an LL.B., and a B.Sc. in Accounting, and is a proud member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
