A Kenyan court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old man to 40 years in prison over the cold blood murder of a university student in 2019.
The Eldoret-based court said that there is sufficient evidence linking Naftali Kinuthia to the murder of Ivy Wangeci, the then-medical student at Moi University.
The heinous act occurred outside the premises of the institution. Kinuthia hacked the deceased twice using an axe before slitting her throat over a love relationship that had turned sour.
While issuing the verdict, Justice Stephen Githinji noted the convict deserved a severe punishment after killing an innocent soul.
The court further stated that there was no evidence to prove that the duo were in a love relationship.
“Even text messages reviewed did not prove evidence of an intimate relationship and the the accused did not also prove a sexual relationship with the deceased,” said Justice Githinji.
Kinuthia had confessed to killing the young lady over the anger issues. He claimed he had spent on her financially, emotionally and psychologically and could not watch her being taken by another man.
He had revealed the victim had abandoned her for another man, and he could not withstand that.
