Maseno University Students Demonstrate Against The Killing Of Colleague During Opposition’s Protests
Students from Maseno University on Tuesday took to the street to protest the death of their colleague allegedly shot by police officers during the anti-government demonstrations on Monday.
The irate students carried placards condemning the incident and demanding justice for their comrade. The protest did not take long as police blasted them with teargas canisters.
William Mayange, a third-year student, was shot on the neck in the Maseno area during the protests. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the police, they were forced to use live bullets to disperse the demonstrators after they ran out of teargas canisters. The police said a stray bullet hit the deceased.
However, Mayange’s friends dismissed the allegations that he was among the demonstrators, noting that he was caught up in the commotion after he left class.
Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the circumstances that led to his death.
