Citizens of Nairobi County have resolved to petition Governor Johnson Sakaja, demanding urgent action to curb rampant corruption and improve basic service delivery, including drainage, sanitation, and youth empowerment.

The decision was made during a public gathering held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi earlier on Thursday, May 15, 2025, where 46 residents representing various sub-counties came together under the banner of the Nairobi County Action Group.

The event was jointly convened by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), and the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), with a large youth presence among the participants.

“We are tired of the rot in City Hall. Corruption is driving a very high level of injustice in this county. If you can’t bribe, the county government treats you like trash and denies you all your rights,” said Ronnie Kathuri, one of the participants.

Participants decried what they called systemic extortion at the hands of city officers, who they say demand bribes for access to services that should be free and fair for all Nairobians.

Beyond corruption, the residents raised concerns over Nairobi’s aging and inadequate drainage infrastructure. With the onset of heavy rains, many parts of the city continue to suffer from flooding linked to blocked or insufficient drainage systems.

“Anyone coming to put up a high-rise building must be required to show how their waste water and sewerage will be managed,” urged Mwanahamisi Omar, another participant.

“We cannot continue using colonial-era infrastructure for a modern city with millions of people.”

In the forthcoming petition to Governor Sakaja, the group will also advocate for investment in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVETs) to help tackle youth unemployment.
