Kenya’s National Construction Authority (NCA) has disclosed why a 10-storey building collapsed in Mirema, Nairobi County.
The building collapsed on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
No casualties were reported, but an adjacent building, vehicle, and Kenya Power infrastructure were devastated.
In a statement, NCA said that its preliminary investigations show that poor structural concrete used in the construction made the building collapse.
The agency promised to conduct a detailed investigation in the coming days to establish the actual cause of the incident.
It further pointed out that the building under construction was a 10-storey; however, the owner had received approval to build a 12-storey building.
NCA said the owner was operating within the law since he had received a permit and license from the Nairobi County government and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
However, the agency pledged to take action against anyone discovered to have broken the law during construction.
“Any person who will be found to have acted in contravention of the law or defied lawful directions issued by a competent authority will be subjected to the full force of the law,” read the statement in part.
