The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost climate resilience and food security in the North Rift region.
The agreement aims to unlock climate finance and support local communities in dealing with climate change.
This decision was reached during a meeting between Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who is also the NOREB chairman, and a team from NCCK led by Bishop Emmanuel Chemengich, the chairman of NCCK North Rift Region.
The MoU will build on the achievements of the Kerio River Ecosystem Inter County Cooperation Agreement signed in 2019 by Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and Turkana counties.
The agreement, coordinated by NCCK and NOREB, requires counties to allocate at least 2% of their development budget to climate change interventions. This provision has since been adopted by other NOREB counties, including Nandi.
The drafting of the MoU will be completed within two weeks, after which a multi-stakeholder forum will be held to review and begin implementation.
Governor Sang said, “It is the right time for us to do this. We must hit the road running and jumpstart the process to unlock the funds.”
Bishop Chemengich echoed the need for collaboration, saying, “We need to partner to build the resilience of our people to end their suffering due to uncontrolled climate change.”
The NCCK team included Programmes Director Phyllis Kamau-Kiarie and North Rift Regional Manager Grace Rugut, who expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential impact.
