The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) donated 60 water tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 litres, to 28 schools and 32 churches in Athi Ward, Kitui County.

The donation, intended to support tree nurseries and environmental conservation projects, improved the community’s water storage capacity by 600,000 litres.

The donation ceremony was spearheaded by NCCK General Secretary Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui at the Kalivu Comprehensive Schools.

The event was attended by jubilant community members, local leaders, and excited school children, all celebrating this essential contribution to water harvesting and sustainability.

Earlier in the day, Kitui Governor HE Dr. Julius Malombe and Rev. Canon Kinyanjui flagged off the tank distribution from the Governor’s Office.

Kennedy Mutati, Director of the Ministry of Water in Kitui County, expressed the County Government’s gratitude for NCCK’s efforts, particularly the Nature Positive initiative implemented in Athi.

“The community here at Kalivu depend on River Athi which is highly polluted, and so we in the County Government greatly appreciate the work being done by NCCK through the Nature Plus project”, said Kennedy Mutati,

Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui said, “We are committed to ensuring children have adequate supply of water so that they remain in school and have healthy lives and a healthy environment”.

He appreciated the Canadian Food Grains Bank, which, through the United Church of Canada, supports the rehabilitation of the environment in Kitui County through the establishment and restoration of sand dams.

The Nature Positive project is also mobilizing the community members in Athi Ward to plant 100 trees each to reach 100,000 trees by next year.
