Six people have died after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a fatal road accident at Nakuru’s Greenstead area, northwest of Nairobi.

The 7 pm crash involved a 14-seater public service van and a track. The former was heading to Kitale, a town in the Rift Valley, and the lorry was heading to Nairobi.

Preliminary investigations show that the lorry driver was overtaking another vehicle when he lost control. The vehicle swerved off its lane and crashed into the van, ripping off almost the entire right-hand side.

Nakuru police boss Beatrice Kiraguri confirmed that five people died on the spot and the sixth person succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

The van’s driver was among the casualties.

The injured ones are receiving treatment at the Nakuru Level V Referral Hospital.

Wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to Nakuru Central Police Station, and the bodies were transferred to the morgue.
