Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary of Kenya Prof Edward Kisiang’ani has told Safaricom Foundation to leverage on the government’s digital superhighway fibre optic expansion project to maximize its impact in communities.
Speaking during the launch of Safaricom Foundation’s 2023 to 2026 strategic plan on Thursday, Prof Kisiang’ani said the project, which seeks to expand Kenya’s fibre optic cable coverage by an additional 100,000 kilometres, will transform public service delivery in the country.
“Safaricom Foundation can leverage on the opportunities created by the digital superhighway to meet its objectives which, as we have seen are in consonant with the Government’s development agenda,” Prof Kisiang’ani said at the event held at Safaricom’s head office in Nairobi.

He said Safaricom Foundation’s focus areas of education, health and economic empowerment are in tandem with the government’s agenda of transforming the socioeconomic well-being of Kenyans through the ‘bottom-up’ approach.
Therefore, Prof Kisiang’ani invited the Safaricom Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Safaricom, to partner with the ICT ministry in providing digital skills for the youth and digitalization of Government services.
Other areas of collaboration identified by PS Kisiang’ani include the use of ICTs in the delivery of health, education and economic empowerment programmes and the positioning of digital technologies as enablers of productive sectors of the Kenyan economy.
Prof Kisiang’ani, who represented Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo at the launch, commended Safaricom Foundation for its achievements.
“I also note that since its inception, Safaricom Foundation has invested in more than 2,000 community projects worth more than Ksh3 billion ($22.9 million) that have transformed over 8 million lives across all 47 Counties.
“It is our expectation that the new strategy will make an even bigger impact on the focus areas of education, health and economic empowerment,” PS Kisiang’ani said.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa and the Foundation’s Chairman Joseph Ogutu also spoke at the event that several senior Government and private sector officials attended.
