The owner of the building that collapsed last week in Ruaka Central Kenya and killed a couple has been arrested.

The suspected was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while attempting to flee the country.
Kiambu police boss Joshua Nkanatha said the suspect is currently held at Kiambu police station pending arraignment in court.

Nkanatha said he, alongside engineers and county officials, will be taken to court and charged with causing death and destruction of property.

"There is loss of life and property damage, people died in Kirigiti and Ruaka, so there are so many things that we are looking at," Nkanatha told the media.

The police boss spoke on Monday at the scene of another building that collapsed in Ruiru town, Kiambu County, in Central Kenya.

The five-story building collapsed on Monday morning at 4 am, just a few hours after the tenants were evacuated following cracks that were witnessed on its pillars.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and firefighters on Sunday afternoon led the evacuation mission.

"Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down," said Governor Wamatangi.
