Police have recovered bags of sugar suspected to be contaminated and unfit for human consumption in Ruaraka, Nairobi.

The contraband sugar was seized following a raid at a small-scale shop within the Riverside area following a tip-off from public members.

This is after a consumer who had earlier bought half a kilo at the retail shop for domestic use noticed strange pellets and informed officers on patrol.

During the raid, police recovered 48 kilograms of the sugar and a further consignment of over 500 kilograms at a wholesale shop within the same area.

The recovery of the suspicious product comes hot on the heels of another recovery in Kisii County, the southwestern part of the country, over the weekend, where a consignment of the sugar was found being repackaged for sale to unsuspecting consumers.

The consignment has been kept as an exhibit after samples were obtained and forwarded to the government Chemist for analysis.

“Members of the public are urged to be on the lookout and report to authorities should they come across the suspicious product that could have devastating effects on their health once consumed,” said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
