A police officer was arrested after he fired but missed his colleague at Nairobi’s Gigiri police station due to a misplaced mobile phone.

The officer is said to have unsuccessfully attempted to shoot his colleague after he misplaced his Tecno Pop Two mobile phone, which was later discovered at the report office.

He was said to have finished his duties and returned to the station armed with an AK47 rifle, enraged over a “missing” phone.

According to witnesses, the constable was disarmed by his fellow officers after shooting and missing his target during the confrontation.

The officer will face internal disciplinary measures, the station’s boss Alice Kimeli said.

The incident comes amid growing concerns about stress among police officers. In the recent past, there have been rise in the cases of murders and suicides carried out by the police.

A 32-year-old Police Constable in Mombasa committed suicide inside his residence at the police line earlier this year.

Police officers discovered Jacob Masha’s body in a pool of blood, with a firearm between his legs, after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots coming from the house.
