PS Kiptoo launches Wangari Maathai 10 million tree challenge

Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo has Launched and commissioned the Wangari Maathai 10 million tree challenge in Nyeri County, central Kenya.

The exercise will involve establishing tree nurseries in identified schools in readiness for planting during the rainy season.

The campaigns for accelerated achievement and maintenance of over 10% tree cover will involve the production of 2 billion seedlings.

The Ministry of Education has made a commitment to producing 500 million seedlings in schools, colleges and TVET Institutions in Nyeri County.

The PS commended efforts by the County government of Nyeri, Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, County Director of Education and the County Commissioner's Office to mobilize schools and other stakeholders to initiate seedlings production in primary and secondary schools.

Ninety-five schools have been identified where seedlings will be produced

and the required seeds will be distributed for immediate sowing, under the direction of technical experts from Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Forestry Research Institute.

"It is important that the seeds are sown now to allow for

transplanting into polythene tubes during the rainy season", the PS said.

The Nyeri Diocese Archbishop Anthony Muheria who also attended the function challenged school heads to formulate actionable strategies to address climate change and safeguard mother nature for generations to come.

During the launch, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) donated 2.6 million tonnes of seedling worth 2.1 million shillings suitable to be planted in the Nyeri County ecological zone.
