A section of religious leaders in Kenya are concerned about the recent rise in violence against women.

They are urging security agencies to act and prevent the menace that has taken the country by surprise from spreading further.

Leaders from various religious groups, including the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), and the Kenyan Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), gathered for a County Dialogue Consultative Forum in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

In a joint statement, they strongly condemned the troubling increase in horrifying murders targeting women.

“As religious leaders, we decry how violence is meted out against women in the country, especially with the recent gruesome killing of a university student,” the statement co-signed by NCCK’s Aggrey Olumola, KCCB’s Gabriel Ombasso and SUPKEM’s Sheik Mohamed Ahmed read in part.

The men in cloth pleaded with President William Ruto and security agencies to work tirelessly to ensure women’s safety and protection.
“We call upon the President and security agencies to ensure that our women are being protected,” the statement read further.

At least four femicide cases have been reported in the country since the year began.

One of the most upsetting incidents was the discovery of the dismembered body of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni in a residential flat in Nairobi’s Roysambu estate.

Two suspects linked to the brutal murder of Rita have been apprehended, and they are helping police with investigations.

According to an autopsy report by government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, the young girl’s killers tried to remove her fingernails.
