Kenyan President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta came together at State House, Nairobi, for a high-level joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), focused on revitalising peace efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The summit, co-chaired by African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, President Ruto (current EAC Chair), and Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa (SADC Chair), marked a significant milestone in consolidating regional peace processes.
It brought together leaders and facilitators under a unified framework aimed at restoring stability in the conflict-affected region of eastern DRC.
The meeting served to formally brief the newly formed EAC-SADC panel of facilitators on their mandate and the expectations of both regional blocs, following a resolution by the Heads of State and Government to harmonise the Nairobi and Luanda peace initiatives.
The five-member panel comprises respected African statespersons: former Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Catherine Samba-Panza (Central African Republic), Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia), Mokgweetsi Masisi (Botswana), and Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), who joined virtually.
The panel has been tasked with providing strategic political guidance, fostering inclusive dialogue, building trust among parties, and supporting lasting peace in eastern DRC in alignment with the African Union’s broader mandate.
Also present were key stakeholders in the DRC peace process, high-ranking regional officials, and international partners.
