Kenya's President William Ruto has joined other global leaders in congratulating Rishi Sunak on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Ruto said Kenya is proud of the achievements made over decades of collaboration between the two nations.

In a statement on Tuesday, President Ruto noted that Kenya looked forward to continuing "this historic partnership and to using emerging opportunities for the mutual benefit of our people".

Sunak was voted by Conservative members of parliament on Monday to succeed Truss as leader of Britain's Conservative Party and, thus, as prime minister after garnering the backing of more than 100 of his party's parliamentarians.

"The government I lead will not leave the next generation - your children and grandchildren - with a debt to settle that we were too weak to pay ourselves," Sunak was quoted by the British media on Tuesday.

"I will unite our country, not with words, but with action. I will work day in and day out to deliver for you. This government will have integrity, professionalism, and accountability at every level. Trust is earned, and I will earn yours."
