Kenyan President William Ruto on Monday, December 9, 2024, paid a courtesy call to his Predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta at his Ichweri home in Gatundu, Central part of the country.
In a statement released by Uhuru Kenyatta, the two leaders deliberated on issues affecting Kenyans.
Some of the issues were animosity within the political class, matters of taxation, insecurity best practices in citizen policing, human capital and the solutions to the challenges.
The duo also discussed the need for a vibrant opposition crucial for the country’s democracy. Kenyan opposition is perceived to be non-existent after the opposition leader Raila Odinga joined the government to push for his African Union Commission chairmanship bid.
Others have also argued that the opposition legislators have been bought by President William Ruto’s administration. It is claimed they have forgotten their oversight role and their work is dancing to the tune of the government.
During the meeting, Uhuru highlighted the areas that he believes are crucial for the stabilization of the country which are accountability and transparency.
“President Ruto paid a courtesy call to the 4th President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta at his Ichaweri Residence in Gatundu. The two engaged in discussions pertaining to Kenya’s national interest particularly matters that have been raised by citizens as challenges and handicaps to their well-being,” read the statement in part.
Uhuru also called for the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), saying delay will only create suspicion and mistrust.
On his part, President Ruto agreed to engage all stakeholders to do away with any unnecessary tension in the country and to propose a reconciliatory way forward.
He said that the tensions caused by the elections are over and it is time to focus on the future as one people.
