Kenya’s Secretary for Foreign Service Ambassador Josephat Maikara, was on Thursday interrogated over the controversial death of a Kenyan diplomat in the UK early this year.
The late Mr. David Gatuthu, serving as Counsellor I at the Kenyan Embassy in the UK, is said to have died after allegedly jumping from the 4th floor of a building in Central London on 17th February 2023.
Ambassador Maikara appeared before the Senate Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations to answer questions about the diplomat’s controversial death and efforts to transfer his benefits to his next of kin.
He told the committee that the Kenyan Government was working closely with the UK to resolve the matter.
He also revealed that the Ministry had even secured a job for the widow of the deceased at the Embassy to closely monitor developments from an ongoing inquiry into the incident.
“The family of the late Mr. Gatuthu was issued with an interim death certificate on 3rd March 2023 which under the Laws of England was to aid in administration of the Estate of the deceased including application for the legal right of the next of kin to deal with the property and money of the deceased,” said Ambassador Maikara.
The committee’s chair, Nelson Koech, told the Ambassador that the committee intends to travel to London to also hear from the Embassy staff and other local authorities on the progress made in the inquiry.
“You need to keep this Committee appraised on all developments into this matter and to also notify the Ministry of our intention to travel to the UK to assess the status and effectiveness of the said inquiry,” said Koech.
The deceased’s body is still being held by UK authorities pending the inquiry’s conclusion.
