Sorrow has engulfed residents of Kandongu village in Kirinyaga County, central Kenya, following the death of a young girl who plunged into a well.

An eyewitness revealed that the six-year-old girl was playing with two other kids near the well when she slipped and fell into the water.

Attempts by residents who responded to the victim's colleagues' scream did not bear fruit because they found her already dead.

Police retrieved the body from the well and transferred it to a nearby mortuary. Meanwhile, police are investigating the circumstances under which the minor died.

Elsewhere, three people were struck dead by lightning in Luanda, Western Kenya, on Sunday.

The two sisters and an elderly woman had taken shelter from the rains in the verandah of a shop when the incident happened.

"We are heartbroken. This occurred after it began to rain. Lightning struck and instantly killed the three. The village is in mourning, and we join the families in their grief, "local authorities stated.

Locals have been urged to take precautions when it rains by seeking appropriate shelter.
