Police officers have apprehended a 29-year-old man believed to be behind the murder of a university student.

A few days after supposedly going into hiding, Ezra Kipkemei was apprehended at the Kibwareng health centre in Kenya's Rift Valley, where he had gone to get medication.

His arrest followed a tip-off from a public member who spotted him at the facility.

"We took quick action by dispatching our police to the facility, and we were able to capture him. He is currently being processed before being sent to Nakuru, where he is believed to have committed the murder," said Owuoth.

The lifeless body of Phyllis Jepleting, a Maths/Biology first-year student at Karatina University, was found inside the suspect's house at Naka Estate, Nakuru County, northwest of Nairobi, on Monday, January 2, 2023.

The body was found after neighbours complained about a foul smell coming from Mr. Kipkemoi's home.

They called the cops, who broke down the door with the help of welders and neighbours and discovered Ms Jepleting's lifeless body on the bed. The body had blood oozing from the mouth, nose and ears.

They used Ms. Jepleting's identifying papers, which were found at the site and were used to identify her body.

The deceased's body underwent an autopsy, which determined that she had been strangled to death.
