Three people perished and scores injured in a fatal road accident involving a lorry and a passenger vehicle locally known as matatu at Makupa Causeway in Mombasa County, Kenya’s coast.
The 14-seater vehicle plunged off a concrete barrier before colliding head-on with the lorry.
“Today, around 7.30 a.m, a 14-seater matatu from Makupa lost control and rolled onto the other side of the road and into oncoming traffic, colliding with a lorry, a canter, and we lost three people,” Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Coastal Region Peter Maina confirmed the accident.
The lorry was from Nairobi heading to Mombasa when the accident took place. On the other hand, the matatu was heading to Kitui, a town in Eastern Kenya.
Among the dead is the matatu driver, and the number of those nursing injuries had not been revealed by the time we were making this publication.
The cause of the crash is still unknown.
“We do not know the exact number of those injured, nor do we know the cause of the accident; investigations are ongoing, and we will be able to provide more information as soon as we know,” added Peter Maina.
The incident occurred few weeks after a horrible road crash along the busy Malindi-Mombasa highway consumed 15 lives. The accident involved a bus and a shuttle.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
