Three robbers armed with guns on Tuesday morning stormed Equity Bank Matuu Branch in Yatta, Kenya’s Eastern, intending to steal.

The thieves disarmed police officers who were guarding the facility before gaining access to the busy bank.

They hold the customers and staff hostage during the 15-minute incident before storming out.

A heavy gunfight ensued between the thugs and security officers, and the former managed to escape. One of the robbers was shot in the arm during the fierce shootout.

“The thugs got in the morning as the staff opened the hall. It was around 9:00 a.m. They took everyone hostage and closed the doors. There was a gun battle but they were shooting in the air. One thug was shot in the arm,” narrated one of the witnesses.

Police told the Standard Gazette that they do not know how much was stolen.

A manhunt for the thugs has been launched. Police said CCTV footage will assist them with investigations.
