Police have arrested two suspects in Nyeri County, Central Kenya, after being found in possession of 52 kilograms of elephant Ivory.

The two suspects, Gichohi, 45 and Wahome, 50, were arrested following an operation conducted by police in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“On May 5, 2023, Police in Nyeri in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service arrested two male suspects in possession of 52 kilograms of elephant ivory with a market value of Kshs5.3 million ($38240),” said the police.

The duo will be arraigned in Court and charged with possessing a wildlife trophy Contrary to Section 93(4) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.

The arrest comes barely a week after a 47-year-old man possessing elephant tasks was arrested at Kirima Sub-County, Laikipia County, Kenya’s Rift Valley.

Alfred Gatheca was arrested following an operation conducted by sleuths from the Serious Crimes unit.

Posing as well-oiled businessmen who rule the underworld, the sleuths lured the suspect before nabbing him.
