Ex-Kenya Ports Authority Director Engineer Fred Kiru has quit Kericho Governor race in favour of Dr Eric Mutai.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Kirui announced that he will be Mutai’s running mate. In a signed statement witnessed by their supporters in a Kericho hotel, South Rift, the two said they will run as a team in Thursday's United Democratic Movement (UDA) party primaries.

The two will have to defeat the former Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter in the nomination which the majority of people have described as a do or die battle.

Keter is among the government officials who resigned in February to vie for the seat. Before being appointed the CS, he was Kericho Senator.

The leaders are eyeing to succeed the incumbent Prof. Paul Chepkwony who is on his second and last term.

Deputy Governor Lily Ngok, Professor James Sang, and independents Engineer Samuel Rotich and Elijah Maru are also running for the county's highest office.
