Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has called for the release of peaceful protesters arrested nationwide during the anti-government demonstrations on Friday.

In a statement, KHRC accused the police of disrupting the peaceful demonstrations with arrests and tear gas.

“Police today arrested dozens of peaceful protesters across the country who were advocating for affordable cost of living, yet the constitution guarantees the right to demonstrate,” said the commission.

“Media footage depicted unjustified arrests by the police, who employed excessive force to disperse peaceful people advocating for affordable life”.

The commission released a list of protesters arrested within Nairobi and are being held in Central Police Station.

The list has the following names: Athumani Said, Anami Toure, Davis Lichuma, Michael Kamanda, Eunice Akinyi, Claris Halanga and Stella Adhiambo.

Others include Collince Odhiambo, Dennis Mbogo, Perpetua Kariuki, Minoo Khya, Maryann, Immaculate, Michael Owino, Beth Atieno, Somo Abdi, Peter Ndoboe and Kennedy Chindi.
