Kenya’s East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member Florence Jematia has been arrested in Nairobi following controversial remarks she made over the weekend in Baringo, Kenya's Rift Valley.

She was nabbed on Wednesday by police officers in Nairobi's Westpark Estate and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters for questioning.

The MP was reported to have threatened to purchase guns for her followers from Baringo County in order to ward off robbers who have posed a threat to the region's security.

Her statements had been denounced by Kenyans on social media, as well as by local politicians, and Jematia had been summoned to record a statement.

“The MP has gone underground after we summoned her to appear before the committee. We have sufficient evidence to charge her with incitement to violence,” said Baringo County Commissioner Abdirizak Jaldesa.

The region has been plagued by frequent bandit attacks, which have resulted in the deaths of dozens of individuals as well as the injuries of dozens more.
