Despite a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Finland has confirmed it will apply to join NATO.
Finland’s President, Sauli Niinisto, said the move would “maximise” the country’s security after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The report says that Finland is expected to submit a formal application to NATO headquarters in Brussels next week.

However, Niinisto said the Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the country’s security environment.
Finland isn’t the only country defying Russia’s warning; Sweden has also shown interest in joining NATO.
On Thursday, the Russian government said it would stop supplying electricity to Findland from Saturday, 14 May, citing problems with payment.
However, the Finnish government called it insignificant as the Russian government only provides a small percentage of the country’s electricity.
