Multiple people have been injured and several others wounded after a vehicle drove into a crowd in Vancouver.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at a street festival around 8:14 PM local time on Saturday (3:14 AM on Sunday UK time).
The police reported that a 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and assured the public that “the incident was not an act of terrorism.”
The number of casualties is currently unknown, but Global BC cited sources as saying that at least 8 people were seen lifeless, including a child.
The incident took place during the Lapu Lapu Festival, which celebrates Filipino culture, at East 43rd Avenue and Fraser in South Vancouver, Canada.
Yoseb Varden, a food truck owner, told the BBC World Service that he witnessed the incident right in front of his van. “The guy killed some of my customers,” he said, adding, “there were people waiting for their buns who got hit.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X, expressing his devastation over the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver. “I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you,” he wrote.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim stated he was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident,” adding that his thoughts are with those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.
The leader of Canada’s Conservative Party called the incident a “senseless attack.” David Eby, leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, also expressed his shock and heartbreak over the incident.
Jagmeet Singh, the New Democratic Party leader who attended the Lapu Lapu Festival but left shortly before the incident, said he was “horrified to learn that innocent people had been killed and injured.”
He added, “As we wait to learn more, our thoughts are with the victims and their families—and Vancouver’s Filipino community, who were coming together today to celebrate resilience.”
The identity of the suspect currently in police custody has not been released as of this report.
