79-year-old John Apelgren charged with 1974 Islington murder

A 79-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 22-year-old woman that happened 50 years ago.

John Apelgren, of Bryden Close, SE26, was arrested and charged on 22 June on suspicion of murder.

The suspect was also charged with indecent assault of a different woman.

The body of the victim, Eileen Cotter, 22, was found in front of a block of garages behind Hamilton Park, Highbury, north London, on 1 June 1974.

Her cause of death was strangulation.

A murder investigation was launched, and no one was charged at the time.

John will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court today, Thursday, 23 June.
