A burglar who was caught red-handed stealing tools worth thousands of pounds from Halfords in Peterborough has been jailed for 3 years.

Nadeem Atwell, 37, broke into Halford’s shop in Mallory Road, Boongate, with an accomplice in the early hours of 21 December, activating an alarm in the process.

Officers attended, leading to the arrest of the other man and Atwell. The police cornered Atwell, but he managed to escape after a struggle.

The police used the CCTV to identify the crime and arrested him the following day.

Further investigation shows that Atwell took 20 sockets set with a retail value of £8,800, which were stolen.

The court heard how Atwell, of East Road, Cambridge, also robbed three bottles of wine at a BP garage in Bretton Way.

Atwell was found guilty following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court in March. He had denied burglary, possessing a firearm with intent and administering a noxious thing. He admitted the additional count of theft from a shop.

On Thursday, 14 May, at the same court, Atwell was sentenced to three years in jail.

PC Levi Peynado said: “Atwell thought he had escaped justice by getting away from officers at the scene, but he was swiftly identified and apprehended.

“I’m pleased he has now appeared in court and been jailed for his crimes.”
