Five Met police officers have been injured after a drunk driver who collided with another vehicle assaulted them at the point of arrest.
Officers sustained large cuts, bruising, and scratches during the assault.
The incident happened on Sunday, July 12 at 17:25hrs in Bromley Road, SE6.
The problem began after a silver Vauxhall Corsa collided with a lamppost and a green Fiat Punto.
The driver of the car attempted to flee the scene on foot, the police said on Tuesday, but was restrained by several officers from the Met’s Territorial Support Group who were at the scene.
Investigators are appealing to possible eyewitnesses who may have had the incident on dashcams or mobile phone footage to come forward.
An officer from the Met’s South East Command Unit leading the investigation, Constable Alan Jones said: “I know members of the public were in the vicinity and will have seen this incident.”
The violent driver punch and bit officers and the driver were forced to put in leg restraints and a spit guard.
Jones said “Officers were attacked by someone who was trying to flee the scene of a serious collision and I am asking those who were present to send us in any footage they have. It will help our investigation and ensure that the person responsible for this faces justice.”
The unidentified driver was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment following the injuries he sustained in the collision.
The man was said to continue his aggressive behaviour and also made some racially abusive comments.
He has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away, assault on police, drink driving and a racially aggravated offence under the Public Order Act, the Met Police disclosed on Tuesday.
