Maher Maaroufe arrested in connection to Sabita Thanwani's death in Clerkenwell

Homicide detectives investigating the death of a student in central London have arrested a man.

Maher Maaroufe, 22, has been detained in the Clerkenwell area on suspicion of murder and assault, a police statement said on Sunday.

On Saturday, Sabita Thanwani, 19, was found with severe neck injuries at Arbour House, student accommodation in Sebastian Street, Clerkenwell.

Police and London Ambulance Service were called to the incident around 05:10hrs on Saturday, 19 March 2022. Despite efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The leading detective, Chief Inspector Linda Bradley, said, "I would like to thank everyone for publicising and sharing our appeal to trace Maaroufe.

"Sabita's family have been updated with this development and continue to be supported by specially trained officers. Our deepest condolences are with them.

"I would ask everyone to respect their privacy at this indescribably devastating time for them as they come to terms with Sabita's murder."
