A man who saw the police and ran into the area of water known as The Silkstream collapsed in Barnet, North London.
On Wednesday, 20 December at around 01:40hrs, police officers noticed a car on The Hyde, NW9.
Upon seeing the police, a man fled from the car and ran towards The Silkstream area.

He then went to the far bank and was observed collapsing.
The officers made their way around the water’s edge to try to reach him without following him into the water.
A fence enclosed the area, but despite efforts, the officers could not reach him.
London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene, and specialists used equipment to assist in reaching the man, and first aid was administered.
The man, believed to be in his late 40s, was taken to the hospital in a critical condition and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the morning of Wednesday, 20 December.
His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have also been informed.
Officers involved are being supported following the traumatic event.
Commander Owain Richards of the Met’s Frontline Police described the incident as “sad” while sending his “thoughts and condolences” to the man’s family and “all those affected.”
Commander Richards added, “It is only right and proper that all the circumstances surrounding this incident are fully investigated, and the Met police will fully cooperate with any inquiry.
“In the meantime, we will be speaking to our partners and the community to provide reassurance and provide as much information as we can.”
