MP for Plymouth, Johnny Mercer has taken to his Twitter account to express what he described as “disgust” after his wife received a soiled nappy via post.
The wife of the defence Minister received the package with a note reading: “Better check and see what your husband has been up to.”
Explaining why he made it public, Mercer said “I publicise this stuff not because I want sympathy – I’m very privileged.
“But I do think people should be aware of what getting involved in politics is really like in 2020 Britain.
This was mailed to my wife (not me) this morning. Tracked as well.”
The post has attracted reactions among Twitter users including Good Morning Britain’s political producer Anne Alexander who described it as “appalling.”
The MP had had reactions before now after he posted on social media that he had had “a tough week” during government’s free school meals squabble with Marcus Rashford
Mercer was among the MPs accused of trying to starve children when they went against providing £15-a-week worth food vouchers for the children during the holidays.
After the “tough week” Mercer posted a photo of himself in front of a sunset in Dartmoor with the words “Really tough old week in politics. No-one said it would be easy. But when you get to come up here for your end-of-week clear-the-head session, it all seems okay.”
