American Actor, Will Smith, has been banned from Academy events, The board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Friday.

Smith has been banned for 10 years, and it includes any Academy events.

The decision was reached after the decision-making members met to discuss possible sanctions following Will's assault on his colleague.

The Academy's board, David Rubin and Chief Executive Dawn Hudson, said in a statement that "The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year.

"However, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith exhibit on
stage."

Starting from 8 April, the board said, "Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards".

It added: "This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith's behaviour is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the Academy."

It could be recalled that Smith, 53, had already resigned his membership from the Academy before the disciplinary hearing, adding that he would "accept any consequences."

In a statement, Smith said, "I accept and respect the Academy's decision."

The board had earlier planned to meet on 18 April, however, Smith's resignation forced the meeting to be brought forward.

The board's statement on Friday sends a "deep gratitude to Mr Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances."
